Horsham Township, Pennsylvania, traces its origins to the late 1600s, when William Penn’s surveyors divided the area for settlement. In 1684, Samuel Carpenter, an English Quaker from Horsham in West Sussex, purchased approximately 5,000 acres and later sold portions to other Quaker settlers. The community was officially established as a township in 1717 and was named after Carpenter’s hometown in England. Early settlement centered around Horsham Road and Easton Road, where the Horsham Friends Meeting House became an important center of religious, social, and economic life.

Horsham remained primarily agricultural throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, although improved roads and nearby railroad service gradually encouraged residential growth. During the 20th century, aviation became a major part of the township’s identity. Harold Pitcairn established an airfield there in 1926, which the United States Navy later acquired during World War II. The property became Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove and supported military operations for more than six decades before officially closing in 2011. Today, Horsham combines historic landmarks such as Graeme Park with established neighborhoods, commercial centers, parks, and ongoing redevelopment of the former military base.
